Nothing ruins a performance faster than a screeching, out-of-tune A string. Violins are notoriously temperamental—they are basically wooden barometers that expand, shrink, and completely lose their tuning every time the weather changes.
If your pegs are slipping, your fine tuners are jammed, or you're just terrified of snapping your E string in half, you're in the right place. Here is how to lock down your tuning and keep your bridge from snapping.
The Hardware: Pegs vs. Fine Tuners
You have two ways to change the pitch of a string, and mixing them up is a quick way to break a string.
1. The Wooden Pegs (Gross Adjustments) Located in the pegbox at the top of the neck, these control massive shifts in tension. If your string is completely loose or a full note flat, use the peg. Turning it toward the scroll tightens the string (sharp), and turning it toward you loosens it (flat).
2. The Fine Tuners (Micro Adjustments) These are the small metal screws down on the tailpiece. They are strictly for tiny adjustments. If your string is just a hair flat, twist the fine tuner clockwise. Never use the wooden peg if the pitch is already close—especially on the ultra-thin E string.
The Tuning Process
Orchestras always tune to the A string (A4 = 440Hz), and you should build that habit immediately.
- Grab the A String: Gently pluck the A string. If you're using our digital tuner, wait for the needle to settle. Left means flat (too low), right means sharp (too high).
- Make the Call: If it's drastically off, loosen the fine tuner a bit, then carefully turn the wooden peg to get it into the green zone. If it's just slightly off, ignore the peg entirely and use the fine tuner.
- Move Down the Line: Once the A is perfectly locked, move to the D string, then the G string, and finally the E string.
- The Second Pass: Here's the trick most beginners miss—tightening the G and D strings increases the total tension on the violin's neck, which often pulls the A and E strings slightly flat again. Always do a quick second pass across all four strings to make sure the tension has stabilized.

Even if your ear is perfect, the physical mechanics of a violin will inevitably fight you. Here is how to win.
The Peg Keeps Slipping
You turn the wooden peg, let go, and it immediately unwinds. Violin pegs are friction-fit cones; they don't have gears like a guitar. As you turn the peg, you must actively push it inward toward the pegbox wall, wedging it into the wood like a cork in a wine bottle. If it still slips, the wood is likely too dry. Keep a bottle of "peg drops" (or peg compound) in your case to add friction.
The Fine Tuner Won't Budge
If you try to turn the fine tuner to raise the pitch but it's completely stuck, you've run out of thread. The screw is bottomed out against the tailpiece. Do not force it. Instead, loosen the fine tuner almost all the way up (which will drop the pitch significantly). Then, use the wooden peg to bring the string back up to pitch, reserving the newly freed fine tuner for the last final adjustments.
The Bridge is Leaning Forward
As you tighten the strings, the immense tension physically drags the top of the bridge forward toward the fingerboard. If you don't catch this, the bridge will eventually snap or slam down against the belly of the instrument. Look at your bridge from the side: the back face (facing the tailpiece) should be perfectly 90-degrees perpendicular to the body of the violin. If it's leaning, grip it firmly with both hands and gently pull the top back into place.
The E String Keeps Snapping
The E string is under massive tension. Always check the grooves on the nut and the bridge. If the wood is pinching the string, it will snap. Next time you change strings, take a standard #2 pencil and color in the grooves. The graphite acts as a dry lubricant, allowing the string to glide smoothly as you tune.
