Tuning a piano by ear (aural tuning) is a deeply rewarding skill that professional technicians use to deal with the unique physics of piano strings. Unlike guitars, pianos suffer from inharmonicity, meaning a simple digital microphone tuner will often result in a piano that sounds dull or out of tune with itself.

How to Use Reference Tones

Instead of staring at a needle on a screen, you can tune using the physical phenomenon of superposition (also known as beat frequencies).

  1. Select Your Root: Ensure the A4 frequency matches your desired pitch standard (usually 440 Hz).
  2. Play the Reference: Click the note you wish to tune on the virtual keyboard above. The tone will sustain continuously.
  3. Play Your Piano: Strike the corresponding key on your physical piano loudly.
  4. Listen for the "Wobble": If the string is out of tune with the reference tone, you will hear a distinct wobbling or beating sound (wah-wah-wah). The faster the wobble, the further out of tune you are.
  5. Adjust the Pin: Carefully turn the tuning pin for that string. As you get closer to the correct pitch, the wobbling will slow down.
  6. Find the Dead Center: When the wobble completely disappears and the sound becomes smooth and continuous, the string is perfectly in tune with the reference pitch.

Dual Playback Modes

When the beats completely stop and the two tones merge into a smooth, single sound, the string is perfectly in tune with the reference tone.

When should I use Struck mode versus Sustain mode?

Struck mode mimics the natural decay of a piano key, which is great for quickly identifying pitches or playing melodies. Sustain mode generates a continuous, non-fading tone (using a harmonically rich waveform) that allows you to easily hear the 'beats' against your physical piano string, making it the essential mode for actual tuning.

Why does tuning a piano require reference tones instead of a microphone tuner?

Pianos suffer from 'inharmonicity', meaning their overtones are slightly sharp compared to theoretical math.
